Hätte es dieses Buch vor vierzig Jahren schon gegeben, wären mir viel Verdruss und Enttäuschungen erspart geblieben. Gute Kommunikation in Projekten ist wichtig. Darin sind sich alle einig. Gelungene Kommunikation gehört zu den wichtigsten Projekterfolgsfaktoren, bestätigt die empirische Forschung. Fragt man die Teilnehmer eines Seminars nach den Mängeln in ihren Vorhaben, so kann man seinen Kopf darauf wetten, dass mit schöner Regelmäßigkeit „schlechte Kommunikation“ an der Pinnwand steht.

Folgerichtig findet man in den meisten Lehrbüchern dann auch, mehr oder weniger ausführlich, entsprechende Abschnitte. Dabei liegt der Schwerpunkt zumeist bei der schriftlichen Ein-Weg-Kommunikation in Form von turnusmäßigen Berichten. Das ganze Spektrum der Kommunikationsmöglichkeiten wird in der Regel nicht erfasst. Ratschläge für gelingende mündliche Kommunikation sind zumeist nicht spezifisch auf Leistungserstellung mit Projektcharakter bezogen. Angesichts einer solchen, nicht besonders erfreulichen Situation ist das Buch von Campbell für mich fast so etwas wie eine kleine Sensation.

Der Verfasser, PMP und bereits Autor mehrerer Projektmanagementbücher, geht von einem fiktiven, alles andere als trivialen Projekt aus. In einem Unternehmen, das Krankenhausbedarf entwickelt und produziert, soll ein Customer-Relationship-Management-System (CRM) eingeführt werden. Ein altes, wenig leistungsfähiges Vorgängersystem muss ersetzt werden. Die Firma hat sich bereits für ein neues Programm, das auf dem Markt angeboten wird, entschieden. Da durch die Implementierung alle Funktionen der Firma betroffen sind, wird auch die gesamte funktionale Linienorganisation mit den jeweils verantwortlichen Personen, mit denen man als Leser bald vertraut wird, dargestellt. Hinzu kommt die Projektorganisation mit Projektleiter, Projektteam, Projektsponsor, Projektchampion und Gremien. Dann legt Campbell los und zieht alle Register der Kommunikationsmöglichkeiten. Hier eine Auswahl aus der Titelliste der Kapitel:

  • Information der Unternehmensspitze
  • Ausarbeitung des Projektauftrags
  • Zusammenstellung des Projektteams und Kommunikation mit der Linie
  • Vorbereitung der Betroffenen auf den organisatorischen Wandel
  • Analyse und Kommunikation der notwendigen Änderungen in den Geschäftsprozessen
  • Ausarbeitung eines Kommunikationsplans für das CRM-Projekt
  • Präsentation von Zwischenergebnissen vor den Interessierten Parteien (Stakeholder)
  • Umgang mit Akzeptanzproblemen
  • Vorbereitung der Linie auf die Übernahme der Projektergebnisse

Das alles wird, immer natürlich am leicht nachzuvollziehenden Beispiel, vorbildlich lebendig, realistisch und zwingend dargestellt. Besonders differenziert und empfehlenswert ist dabei das Kapitel, das sich Akzeptanzproblemen widmet.

Bei der Lektüre wird man sich immer wieder der Fehler bewusst, die man selbst gemacht hat. Man fragt sich: Warum habe ich es eigentlich in meinen eigenen Vorhaben nicht auch so gemacht? Oder: Warum bin ich – zu Unrecht natürlich – stillschweigend davon aus gegangen, dass die Stakeholder die notwendigen Informationen schon haben? Meine Meinung: Wer dieses Buch sorgfältig liest und die Ratschläge befolgt, kann auf eine Menge anderer Projektmanagementliteratur getrost verzichten. Er wird dann auch sehen, dass viel wichtiger als ausgefeilte stochastische Modelle zur Risikobewertung, umfangreiche Nutzwertmatrizen und komplizierte, weit verzweigte Entscheidungsnetze – um nur diese Beispiele von fehlgeleiteten Entwicklungen zu nennen – eines ist: regelmäßige, wahrheitsgemäße, genaue, aktuelle, gut formulierte und auf die jeweilige Zielgruppe ausgerichtete Informationen. Wer das wirklich verinnerlicht hat – und dabei hilft einem der Autor enorm –, der wird sich das Leben in Projekten erheblich erleichtern. Zum Schluss mein Rat an einen interessierten deutschsprachigen Verlag: Lassen Sie das Werk übersetzen. Viele Jünger des Projektmanagements werden es Ihnen danken.
